For my mask, I was inspired by roots. Roots represent growth, and are also reminders of the experiences and struggles that we encounter when growing into ourselves. Earlier this year I struggled with some deep personal challenges that I think shaped me into being the person I am today. I wanted the roots to represent these struggles, which is why I molded them as wrapping around and consuming the body, because at the time the struggles seemed all encompassing and inescapable. I also added a lot of rough texture in the roots to contrast the smoothness of the mask, which represents me as grown and free of my previous struggles.
